Exploring Galaxy Diner (Richmond, VA)

Let’s get the low hanging fruit out of the way. With a name like Galaxy Diner, it’s just a matter of time before I invoke statements like: “The food is out of this world!” Or maybe I could go with something like “It’s galaxies apart from other diners.”

Well, the truth is Galaxy Diner is an imaginative, unorthodox, good ol’ comfort food establishment that allows for fun and fellowship with friends.

College buddy breakfast check-in.

Isn’t that what diners are for?

The close environment makes it easy to share conversation or have a solo sesh… just you and the food. Speaking of the food. I had the Breakfast Burrito.

Not sorry. It was amazing, and a very generous serving. The grilled tortilla wraps a portion of scrambled eggs, onion, mushroom, green peppers, cheddar cheese and your choice of bacon, ham, black beans, or sausage.

I’m a meatatarian, so I had the sausage. So flavorful! Love, love, loved it!

It was served with a side…either stewed tomatoes or apples. I chose the apples, but they weren’t my favorite. I’ve had so many good stewed apples with all the buttery sweet flavor that I love so this was not as flavorful for me. I repeat… it wasn’t my tastes, but I could see someone who is not quite as sweet toothy as me really loving it.

My friend ordered a side of pancakes, and I quickly informed him that we would be sharing. The pancakes were large, fluffy and sprinkled with confection sugar.

He also ordered the Callahan Platter, which is a sight to behold. Taking it from the bottom to top, the meal includes hash browns, 2 slices of toast, country fried steak, 2 eggs over easy and white pepper gravy. That’s a mouthful literally and figuratively.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the decor. You’ll feel like you’re in a Jamiroquai video because it’s definitely an inter-planetary good vibe zone.

Diners with themes are awesome, and Galaxy Diner nails it.

Topping things off, for tourists like me, it’s a fun neighborhood, and that counts. It’s got a bit of a Boho-hippie vibe, with lots of boutiques and art and it felt like there was lots of plants in the urban stretch I walked through. Galaxy Diner is located right in the heart of Richmond’s Carytown neighborhood.

I vote “Yes!” for a return trip, and soon.
