I wasn’t expecting to eat Christmas Eve dinner in Virginia Beach, but sometimes the unexpected is just how the cookie crumbles, and that’s okay. The unforeseen stay at Doubletree Hotel’s oceanfront location, in Virginia Beach, gave me a chance to visit the hotel’s restaurant called Mahi’s Seafood & Sushi. The serene and charming restaurant has a gorgeous view of the ocean and an equally enticing menu.
As the name of the restaurant implies, seafood is the main event with Mahi. The restaurant is named after the Japanese dolphinfish—not to be confused with a dolphin. Seafood items include rockfish, salmon, mahi, and lobster, among other delectables.
The sushi selection is no slouch either. Chef specialties like the Sugi Roll include smoked eel, cream cheese, avocado, tempura crunch, eel sauce, and caviar. Then there’s the fusion roll menu, including the Yellowtail roll with the popular yellowtail fish, caviar, and scallions.

My choice was a salmon burger made with fresh Asian-spiced salmon, sambal & brown sugar-candied pork belly, Asian slaw & soy aioli on a butter-toasted brioche bun. Let’s rewind because the sambal brown-candied pork belly on top of the salmon burger was the whole reason I ordered this handheld. Sweet and savory with the contrasting pork and fish textures made for a super intriguing and imaginative menu choice.

The salmon was served with your choice of fries or coleslaw, but since there was Asian slaw huddled up in the sandwich, I figured I already double-scored.
The price point for meals and entrees (as of December 2023) was generally between $20 and $45. Even though the meal took a while, I was much more interested in the quality of the food and the service. Neither one disappointed. The service was definitely attentive and prompt, which goes a long way toward satisfaction being guaranteed.
Mahi’s Seafood & Sushi serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. And here’s a fun fact, Mahi’s was open on Christmas day, which is a much-appreciated service for travelers desiring a hot meal on a holiday.
