First Time at First Watch

There were so many videos all over the internet about this one. Then there were the people asking, “Have you ever been to First Watch?” Okay, enough is enough. What is this place about? I decided that Saturday morning was a great time to find out.

I went to First Watch with a friend and it’s such an open and charming environment with all kinds of farm paraphernalia adorning the walls. The theme of First Watch refers to the first shift of work, and these early risers are only open from 7:00 am. to 2:30 pm. I was surprised to learn that the restaurant was founded back in 1983. At first, the eatery just concentrated on breakfast but in years to come incorporated brunch items as well.

The staff was ultra accommodating and gave us a booth to stretch out and make our dining choices. Let’s talk about beverages. I started with a hot chocolate and “Oh to the yes!” It was so good. Let me explain. So, the hot chocolate itself was hot, chocolatey, and sweet, but then you add on the creamy and delectable whipped cream with drizzles of chocolate crowned with the faintest of powdered sugar.

I could seriously just come back for that!

My friend ordered a Morning Meditation juice, consisting of orange, lemon, turmeric, organic ginger, agave nectar, and beet juice. I didn’t taste it, but she raved so let’s take that as a glowing endorsement.

On a sunny September Saturday, we kept it super autumnal with an order of Salted Caramel Holey Donuts. (On a separate note, I really miss the actual spelling of doughnuts, but I digress.) The Holey Donuts have an awesome presentation spiced with pumpkin pie spice sugar, submerged in warm apple butter and drizzled with crème anglaise and sea salt caramel then topped with gingerbread cookie crumbles and powdered cinnamon sugar. Definitely ambitious, but not bad at all.

The seasonal menu also offered something called the Million Dollar Breakfast Sandwich. Come on, I couldn’t pass it up, plus I looked at the picture as I came in and thought, “How can I not get this?” So, I got it and I was not disappointed. Well, let me rewind. I was a little disappointed with the size because I thought it was going to be mammoth but it was probably just the right size not to be shamefully greedy.

With a side of potatoes, this sandwich is served with the restaurant’s Million Dollar Bacon and an all-natural pork sausage patty.

Additionally, the Million Dollar Breakfast sandwich comes with cage-free eggs, Wisconsin Gouda, fresh arugula, and Mike’s Hot Honey served on an English muffin. But can we talk about this honey?

This honey…maaaan! It had me trying to figure out what was in it. I’m thinking ginger, honey, and pepper. I was wrong, Mike’s Hot Honey is made with honey, chilies, and vinegar and you can order it on Amazon if you can’t find it in your local store.

The sandwich was on their fall menu, so depending on when you read this article, just know that it might not carry over through all the seasons.

On the other side of the table was the Turkey Sausage Gravy on a hearty biscuit with a side of eggs and potatoes. I’m told it was good but don’t expect this to be a sausage biscuit. It’s your classic sausage and gravy meal, maybe a little healthier since it’s turkey.

First Watch has nine locations in Maryland and Virginia with plenty of options for vegans and anyone else with a palate for something creative and pleasing for breakfast or brunch.
