A Celebration of Sweet Goodness: Duck Donuts

Duck Donuts is a delightful escape for anyone with a sweet tooth. Originating from the charming coastal town of Duck, North Carolina, this donut chain has expanded its reach, bringing its unique concept and mouth-watering offerings to over 100 locations in the states and internationally.

Hot, fresh, made to order, with so many options! That’s good enough to get you in the door of Duck Donuts, but there’s more. Add the taste factor, and Duck Donuts more than meets the criteria for a seriously special treat.

On a recent trip to the oceanfront at Virginia Beach, I took the opportunity to check out Duck Donuts. Having heard about the chain, I was intrigued by the flavors and was all too happy to conduct a taste test.

Upon entering the Virginia Beach store, an enticing aroma of freshly made doughnuts greeted me, and “Oh how enticing it was.” What sets the Duck Donuts franchise apart is its commitment to customization. The friendly staff guides you through the creative process, and with every doughnut made to order, the customer gets a warm and fresh experience every time.

The doughnut-making process is all done out in the open. It starts with a simple, yet delicious, vanilla cake donut as the base. Once it comes out of the fryer, the real fun begins!

You can choose from a mother lode of coatings, including classic options like chocolate, maple, and vanilla, or venture into more adventurous territory with peanut butter or lemon. For the finishing touch, add your choice of toppings, such as rainbow sprinkles, chopped peanuts, or even bacon bits for a more daring palate.

Duck Donuts also has specialized menu options. I had the Strawberry Sugar doughnut, which has a pink strawberry glazed frosting with confections sugar. It was perfection, plus the name is just irresistible. Additionally, there are choices like Blueberry Lemonade, Blueberry Pancake, The Boardwalk, which has glazed icing, OREO® Cookie Pieces, powdered sugar, and vanilla drizzle.

Another fun one is the Bacon in the Sun, which, if you are wondering, is a maple icing-coated doughnut with chopped bacon and salted caramel drizzle.

While the doughnuts are undeniably the star of the show, Duck Donuts also offers sandwiches, made with doughnuts and your choice of protein: egg, cheese, sausage, or bacon. Additionally, there are a variety of other treats like ice cream sundaes atop a customized doughnut, or enjoy a freshly brewed cup of coffee, or a refreshing iced latte to complement your doughnut creation.

For those who prefer a cooler option, the store also serves milkshakes in various flavors, perfect for a hot summer day.

Although, Duck Donuts isn’t as common as your other chain doughnut shops, when you see it, just know that it’s worth the trip.
