Tea and Biscoff for an in-flight snack.

What Snacks Do the Airlines Serve? Part 2: American Airlines

According to Airpotia, a certain patriotically named airline flies an estimated 4,800 domestic and international flights per day. That’s a lot of wheels up and snacks received. So, as we embark on part 2 of “What Snacks do the Airlines Serve?” this time, our eyes are on American Airlines.

On my recent flight to Miami, I was excited to get my onboard snack. I wanted to write this article, but that wasn’t the only reason. My pre-flight research led me to believe that the snack was going to be Biscoff, and it was.

In case you’re wondering, “What is Biscoff?” It is a caramel-spiced Speculoos biscuit—a creation of Belgian baker, Jan Boone, Sr. in 1932.

Boone, Sr. was also the owner of Lotus Bakeries in the small town of Lembeke, Belgium. He named the biscuits Lotus Speculoos to represent the purity of its namesake flower. Later, in a rebranding, the cookies were named Biscoff, an ode to the biscuit’s perfect mate—coffee.

On my flight, I had tea with my Biscoff, and it was no slouch either.

The baker’s creation has been a hit for years but it is really enjoying a popularity streak as of late. From its incorporation into cheesecakes, ice cream, and tiramisu, there are no limits to the biscuit’s creativity.

Biscoff has also made its way into San Francisco, where you can check out the Lotus Biscoff Coffee Corner. No doubt, it’s where all the cool kids go.

Another area where Biscoff has landed is at Gordon Ramsay’s Navy Yard restaurant, Fish & Chips, in Washington, D.C. The Biscoff shake is very popular on the menu. It blends Biscoff Speculoos cookies in vanilla ice cream with Biscoff spread. Next, it’s topped with whipped cream, Biscoff crumbles and Biscoff butter.

It’s sound absolutely exquisite, but guess what? You can make it at home. Check out the recipe for the shake, on the Lotus Biscoff website.

So, now you know a little more about Biscoff. Tell me. You’re not the least bit hungry for that Biscoff shake? Now, wouldn’t it be great if American Airlines served the Biscoff shake on their flights.

(Just joking…you have to have both feet planted on land for all that richness.)

The next time you are in the cookie aisle, check out Biscoff. Alternatively, wait and enjoy this caramelized delight on your next flight with American Airlines.
