Make Room for Django’s Hot Chicken

Django’s Hot Chicken Jessup, MD

With a name like Django’s Hot Chicken, I couldn’t just pass by. So, I didn’t…I committed to the adventure.

Right off the bat, my impressions of the Jessup, Maryland location was that it’s a fun spot with lots of colors and lights. It’s a great place to come, sit and have lunch or order ahead and carry out.

I didn’t love the music because there were too many curses and too many objectionable lyrics about women. I want to put that on the table because the type of music an establishment plays can be enough to chase business out the door, and most people will never say a word. They just won’t come back.

You want to have an environment that you can bring your kids without having to put ear plugs in their ears.

That’s all I’m going to say about that because I came to check out the chicken.

Django’s has half chicken, chicken sandwiches, and several varieties of wings, among other things. I settled on the wings, but I didn’t get the hot ones. I know, it’s in the title. I had to go back to work, and I didn’t need those problems.

I took one of the staff’s recommendations and tried the Honey Soy Garlic wings.

Listen!

I found these wings to very unconventional. At first thought, it was certainly an odd flavor combination, but when you take a bite, it all makes sense.

When I received my order, the cook apologized because it took about 10 to 15 minutes to receive it. I didn’t mind. I was told from the beginning; nonetheless, he explained that every order of chicken is fried fresh.

I’m good with it. I want my chicken hot, and it was still hot when I drove back to work.

This chicken was fried to golden perfection, remarkably crispy, but what was even more astonishing was the juiciness sealed into the fried chicken. I loved the originality, and the taste was quite good. Now, in my humble opinion, they could lay off the soy sauce just a bit. It had so much fried into the chicken that there was a pool of soy sauce just hanging out at the bottom of the box.

By no means is this a complaint, just an observation.

I’m looking forward to going again and sampling more flavors, especially the hot ones. I checked out their Facebook page and saw some of the other hot chicken offering which includes southern hot chicken, Nashville hot chicken, hot wings and some insanely huge chicken tenders.

Another thing that surprised me was my side order. I could have gone with fries, but I decided to go with the potato salad. I just did not want the double grease option of fries and fried chicken.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much. Usually, your run of the mill potato salad from some carry out spots are simply potatoes, mayo, and not much else.

Potato Salad

What a delightful surprise when I dug in. I’ll tell you that mama, auntie, and grandma would have been proud.

That potato salad was the truth. It had layers to it. It had, celery, relish, and maybe dill. It also had a bit of color, which could indicate that egg was involved. I was genuinely impressed. I would take it to any barbecue and be proud.

Django’s Hot Chicken’s other sides include waffle fries, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, and more.

Last, but not least…the sweet tea. Is that the choir singing?

I would never compare earthly food to the heavenly hosts singing, but I’m telling you, just name your favorite earthly choir and that will suffice. I know it’s dramatic, but all sweet tea is not built the same.

Mix up your half and half blend with sweet tea and lemonade or drink the tea by itself. Either way, it’s delicious. Now, here’s a friendly health note: You might want to limit yourself to one moderate size cup, the sugar content is pretty high, and that’s coming from someone who loves ‘sweet’ anything.

You love to see when a restaurant makes a place for itself, so make room in your catalogue of restaurants for a different kind of culinary experience to make you smile. If you’re in Jessup, Maryland; Houston, Texas, or Braselton, Georgia, give Django’s Hot Chicken a try.
